- | Following on from the Prime Ministers statement on Sunday re the easing of restrictions some people have asked about caving.
- | Firstly I will stress that it is not Mendip Cave Rescues job to tell cavers if or where they should go caving. | + | [[news:2022.10.05_j_rat_digging_award_2022|{{ : |
- | However, the following should be bourne in mind.
- | The PM made it very clear that you can meet one friend outside keeping 2 mts distance. Caves are not outside and the caving code states a minimum of 4 in a group. So unless it is a family living together its difficult. | + | </ |
- | The only pastimes allowed are golf, tennis and those where social distancing can be maintained. It cannot be maintained in caving. | + | <panel type=" |

+ | The gate at Compton martin Ochre Mine has needed replacement for some time, after the old gate rusted away.
- | MCR have made certain preparations | + | This has now been completed, so please remember to bring a CSCC key if you are visiting. |
- | Of course we would not hesitate to attend a call out but it could take longer than normal with some cavers self-isolating. Not only would rescuers be putting themselves at risk of contracting the virus from a casualty but the casualty would also be at risk from the rescuers. | + | < |
- | The goodwill we have with landowners on Mendip could well be put in jeopardy if cavers start arriving. The club huts are all still closed as are most caves. The two longest caves, St. Cuthberts and Swildons Hole are closed to cavers until the lockdown is lifted. | + | 1st June 2022 |
+ | </ | ||
- | Finally caving and British Caving in particular gained enormous praise from the public and great PR following on from the Thailand rescue in 2018. One rescue will put the current positive profile that caving has back for years.
- | So please stay safe. | + | <panel type=" |

+ | ROCKFALL IN THE AREA OF THE WATERFALL CLIMB, GB CAVERN
+ | |||
+ | Following the rockfall notified and publicised in early February, a further inspection trip was scheduled for 6 April, following the relaxation of covid restrictions. On 5th April, a report was received of a further fall. The inspection trip comprised Linda Wilson (Conservation Officer), Dave King and Graham Price (CCC Directors). A large area of the side of the passage above the big steps on the left hand side (when travelling into the cave, heading downstream) has come away, resulting in a massive, unstable talus cone of boulders, large rocks, smaller shattered rocks and mud that now completely covers the steps almost to the base of the ledge in the middle of the climb. Boulders and large rocks are spread over a wide area in the passage below the climb ...

+ | Dear Southern Cavers,
+ | |||
+ | It is with some relief that as from Monday 29th March that the national “stay at home” rule will end, and the long path to a return to something like normality can begin. This means that it is no longer illegal to leave home without a valid excuse, though the government asks that we all minimise the number of journeys we make. From Monday 29th it is also permitted for up to 6 people, or two households, to meet outdoors and for people to take part formally organised outdoor sports ...
